Reviews
This is what John Leonard said about the CD in the Devon and Cornwall Jazz Diary.
Dave Martin formed his Jabbo Five Band in 2010 to introduce Jabbo's music to a w
ider audience, many of whom had not heard of "Jabbo" Cladys Smith. Not copies but interpretations of Jabbo's 1929 Brunswick recordings are mixed with other popular standards on this CD.
David Martin leads his band on cornet with Des Bacon on reeds. John Beecham plays tuba and trombone with Pete Miller on banjo and guitar. Mike Denham on piano completes the line-up. All these musicians carry fine pedigrees, having had experience over past years with well known nationally recognised bands.
The CD is well recorded, setting a standard with "Ace of Rhythm" by Jabbo. That standard is maintained throughout the 16 tracks lasting over 70 minutes.
I was introduced to Jabbo Smith's trumpet playing during a presentation to the Exeter Recorded Jazz Society some time ago. My appetite is now whetted - and I still want more Jabbo!! Great music, well played, and exciting. More please David.
